Day 07 - 08/09/22 - Qaqortoq, Greenland
Arriving at this picturesque small Greenland town, we were greeted with scenic views and a calm harbor in which to anchor. Today would be our second tender port. We weren't in a hurry to depart since it was such a small town and the all aboard time was 5:30pm. After breakfast we gathered our things and headed for the tender platform where we immediately got on board.
Qaqortoq is nestled at the end of a small bay. The town is built on a hillside and there are many colorful houses and other buildings that dot the hillsides. We were greeted by an older native fellow who was beating a tambourine like instrument and moaning some type of chant. He did this the entire time we were on shore (over 4 hours) and he had a tip container in front of him.
After an initial cruise through the first gift shop, we started walking the town. The first thing we encountered was a series of stone carvings in the prominent and plentiful granite rocks. They were well done.
There was a nearby fish market with much locally caught fish for sale and the accompanying fish smell. We snapped a photo at the town square whale fountain and continued our walk to the red church, but it wasn't open. We continued our walk around the town to the backside and took a road that led up past more apartment style housing and what looked to be a high school. I should mention it was in the high 30's or low 40'sf, so we were layered up.
At the high point of the road we found a steep trail that would take us down a rocky path to some stairs and a road that would wind its way back to the port area. Reaching the port area, we stumbled upon a seal hide clothing facility. They had all sorts of garments made of sealskins. We could even see their sewing area. The name of the facility was Discover Greenland. Back at the starting point, Angela made a T-shirt purchase before we tendered uneventfully back to the ship.
We ended up in the Crows Nest to watch the sail-out where we saw a whale spout and numerous large icebergs. We attended the early Hyperion Knight concert on the main stage before grabbing a late dinner at the NY Pizza location. Hyperion came by and we had a short chat thanking him for the performance and reminiscing about seeing him on the Rotterdam last December and on prior cruises.
After dinner we adjourned to our stateroom for an early bedtime as tomorrow scenic cruising starts at 7am.
