Day 03 - 08/05/22 - Sydney, Nova Scotia
It was good to wake up in this delightful little port. We met Vicki and Maria in the Ocean Bar at 7:45am. They would be our traveling companions today on the taxi tour I had pre-booked. After the message from the cruise director that we were cleared to depart the ship, we headed out to find our taxi driver. After a little bit of delay, I found Karan and we headed out for LI uisbourg to visit the lighthouse and the fort. Along the way, once again we encountered fog and it persisted for the next few hours. After visiting the lighthouse we went to the fort visitor center and purchased tickets. Their shuttle bus whisked us out to the fort.
The fort is a reconstruction and restoration of a French fort & village. It's well done and we wished we had more time than an hour there. From there we drove about an hour the opposite direction to Baddeck to visit the Alexander Graham Bell museum. We found this one interesting. For me I learned that Mr. Bell had a very diverse set of interests beyond the telephone. Most interesting to me was his interest in tetrahedral kites and hydrofoils. Afterwards we enjoyed lobster rolls at The Freight Shed on the waterfront.
Karan, our driver, was wonderful. I highly recommend tours from CapeBretonTaxiTours.Com.
Back at the ship, we ate a light dinner of Dutch pea soup from the Dutch café. Yummy!
The evening entertainment was a good comedian, Chris Pendelton. She not only told very funny jokes, she also played a wicked fiddle. Afterwards we listened to the pianists from Billboard Onboard before retiring for the evening.
In retrospect, we think we would like to return here via land means. The people are super friendly and there's lots of historic and scenic items including the Cabot Trail (a series of hikes)
